Director: Gabriel Axel
Rating: 9.5/10
You can almost smell Isak Dinesen in the air when the movie has a strong female protagonist and the story has something to do with the Danes. Needless of saying, it's a beautiful movie and perfect for Christmas Eve viewing. It has all the ready ingredients for it: the very pious Christian characters, the innocence and the beauty of the country people and that charming, loving soul who believes in giving and kindness.
It's a movie that will touch you doubly. It's a movie that will make you believe that if you're an artist, any kind of artist, you'd never be poor and if you have love and kindness in your heart, you don't really need money.
Saying anything about this movie will actually ruin it do, I'd keep this review short. Watch it if you enjoy creating anything, cooking included, watch it if you want that warm and fuzzy feeling, the kind that mulled wine gives you and above all watch it if you have enjoyed those sweet, innocent stories by Chekhov or Ruskin Bond that always stay in you because just like those stories, Babette, too, will stay with you forever.
